From what amount are shipping costs included?
For purchases over 29 €, shipping costs are free (shipments to mainland Spain).
Do you ship to the Canary Islands?
At the moment we don’t ship to the Canary Islands, but we hope to be able to get there very soon!
How should I keep the muffins once my order is delivered?
If you order directly from us, the muffins will be shipped completely thawed. We advise you to keep them at room temperature, ideally stored in an airtight container outside the fridge, and to finish them within 10 days from the thawing date as stated in your order. The muffins cannot be frozen again.
What does it mean that our vegan muffins may contain traces of milk and eggs? Are they still vegan?
The fact that a product may contain traces of milk and eggs means that other products that do contain milk or eggs as an ingredient are also made in the same facilities or machinery in which they are produced. In our case, the muffins are made in the facilities of our founder Estefanía’s family, who have been bakers since 1976. As other products containing milk and eggs are also made there, and even though the machinery is cleaned very well before and after making our muffins, we have to indicate it on the labelling as a warning for people with allergies.
All our muffins are 100% plant-based and they hold the vegan certification V-Label.
Why may they contain traces of sulphites?
As explained in the case of milk and eggs (see previous answer), none of the ingredients of our muffins contain sulphites, but as they are made in a place that also handles products that do contain ingredients with sulphites, it has to be indicated on the label.
If La mala leche is a vegan company, why don’t you make your muffins in a 100% vegan environment?
As our founder’s family has had a traditional bakery since the 1970s, it made sense that they would be the ones making our muffins. In this way, we can devote more time and energy to the creation of new recipes, the promotion of vegan and sustainable values, and in the near future, the development of a series of cultural products revolving around different kinds of ecoactivism.
Are the muffins’ recipes original?
Yes, Estefanía came up with the recipes from scratch, after more than 100 tests, first in her kitchen in Berlin, and then in Alicante. Her family’s company makes these muffins exclusively for La mala leche.
Are the muffins’ ingredients organic?
Yes, our muffins are made with certified organic ingredients. We currently have the vegan V-Label certification, and will soon start the process of getting the European organic certification.
¿Where can I buy the muffins?
You can find them either in our online store, and in specialized stores in Spain. Soon we will upload a list of stores where you can find our muffins.
Why is the new format frozen?
When it comes to our muffins, the main challenge wasn’t just to make them delicious, but also more sustainable. That obviously meant the rejection of traditional ways of packaging, such as plastic bags and the use of artificial preservatives. Eventually we found the solution: to freeze the muffins once freshly baked and pack them in a compostable bag (OK compost INDUSTRIAL certification) and in a cardboard box (FSC certified). The outcome of this process is soft and tender muffins entirely free from plastic and artificial ingredients.
How to preserve the muffins?
If you buy them from a physical shop, keep them at -18ºC maintaining the cold chain. In the label you’ll find more information about the best way to preserve and to defrost them. If you buy them from our online shop, the muffins will arrive defrosted and ready to eat. We recommend keeping them in an airtight container at room temperature outside the fridge. That way, they’ll keep for at least 10 more days.
What is their shelf life?
Our muffins have a shelf life of 6 months when kept at -18 ºC. You will find the expiring date on the safety seal on the box. Once defrosted, follow the instructions on the label for how to preserve them.
What to do with our compostable packaging:
The compostable bag is certified with the OK compost INDUSTRIAL certification of TUV Austria, which guarantees that they are compostable in industrial composting plants. You can reuse it as a garbage bag for organic waste.
The cardboard box is certified with the FSC certification for responsible forest management and can be easily recycled in the same way that any other piece of cardboard.
Are online deliveries also plastic-free?
Yes. All orders from the online shop are shipped plastic-free. The boxes are made of recycled cardboard. When shipping our muffins, we use kraft paper as filler. And for our concept store items we reuse unused newspapers, that come from surplus newspapers that weren´t sold.
Why does the fact that the muffins are vegan make them more sustainable?
The production of animal-based foods has a large environmental footprint for a number of reasons which we invite you to read about in our sustainability section. Shifting toward a more plant-based diet is good for animals, good for you and good for the planet.
